Is it in you to compete?
Each year, 45 men and women are chosen to represent JMSB in regional, national and international case competitions. The competitions are in various disciplines such as finance, marketing, accounting, MIS, human resources, tax, strategy, entrepreneurship, ethics and labour arbitration. For many competitions students are able to present in English or French. Students who are selected are sent to places around the world such as Hong Kong, England, Scotland, Texas, California, Ohio, Washington, British Columbia, Manitoba and more!
What is it?
Essentially students are given a real life case study in which a company has a specific problem. The team has a certain amount of time to analyze the situation and prepare a powerpoint presentation to present a recommendation towards a panel of judges, which include high level industry professionals. In order to train for these competitions students will be enrolled in a “Case Competition” class which is a 3 credit business elective which gives you the presentation and analysis skills needed for business problems in the various disciplines.
What are the benefits of joining?
Practical training:
Students who come out of this all say they obtain the presentation skills and practical knowledge that are vital to get ahead in the working world. The case preparations are set in a highly addictive, competitive atmosphere which trains you for the business life.
Networking:
Being part of the Commerce Games / ICBC delegation lets you meet hundreds of people from other schools and cultures and not to mention making new friends in JMSB. This includes being sent to international case competitions to compete on behalf of JMSB.
Career Opportunities:
Many students through the competition program have met countless number of important contacts and have obtained jobs following graduation. Some have had the opportunity to be hired by the very judges that evaluated their presentations as companies use case competitions as an important recruiting tool.
