February 19-25, 2011 – JMSB earned a third place finish at the NIBS competition (Network of International Business Schools) held at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Students from around the world participated in the week-long competition event which adopted a round robin format. Cleo Roch, the attending coach for this year’s NIBS team, congratulated the JMSB team – Khalid Alali, Dany Asad, Louis Martyres, and Joy Minor – and praised their semi-final status at this year’s NIBS competition.

In the preliminaries, JMSB went up against Dublin, Leuven, Lahti, and Memorial. Team JMSB presented viable, realistic and impeccably detailed solutions impressing both the judges and their attending coach.  Consistently strong performances led JMSB to 4 consecutive wins in the preliminaries.  JMSB took the lead into the semi-finals and faced Memorial a second time.  The judges were split; and in the end Memorial passed to the final round to eventually win the competition.

The NIBS 2011 final results were:
1st place – Memorial
2nd place – Bishops
3rd place – JMSB, Leuven (Belgium)

Special thanks to Tim Field and Cleo Roch for their time and effort in coaching the NIBS 2011 team. Special thanks also go to Head Coach Mark Haber for his support of the competition program.

February 20-26, 2011 –The first round of the John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition (JMUCC) consists of a round robin tournament of three short preparatory cases with six divisions of four teams. Each team competes against every other team in its division. This is followed by a 24 hour research case, in which each team is scored individually.

In JMSB’s division, scored in the first round were extremely close; and every team had a chance to move on by winning the second round. Finalists proceed by making presentations against other winning teams of other divisions. While JMSB delivered a very strong performance, the team was beaten in a very close battle and did not move on.

The final results of the 2011 JMUCC were:

  1. University of Alberta
  2. University of British Columbia
  3. Singapore Management University

Congratulations to Hadi Azar, Adam Forlini, Kirsten Law and Mitchell Robitaille for representing JMSB at the John Molson Undergraduate Competition. The team demonstrated great cohesiveness and team dynamics which cannot be measured with scores. Head Coach Mark Haber remarked: “This particular team demonstrated a unity and a spirit that I have seen only a few times in fifteen years of doing what I do; and they were told so by judges and competing coaches.”

The event organization was also worthy of praise. “I also have to say that this was a meticulously run competition. Congratulations to the organizing committee. All in all JMSB was represented well at all levels. We should be very proud of our school,” Haber commented.

A special thank you to Christian Bonneau who coached the team for a very demanding competition. Special thanks also go to Head Coach Mark Haber for his support of the competition program.

Jan. 18, 2011 – JMSB brought home another case competition title over the weekend. The Ryerson OBC victory is JMSB’s second consecutive win at the event. The Organizational Behaviour Case Competition (OBC) is Ontario’s premier Human Resources case competition. Until 2010, the event was reserved for Ontario business schools only. JMSB’s entry last year blew away the competition and the team took home the title.

In 2011, JMSB returned as defending champions and faced the challenge head on. Participants had two hours to read a case and twenty minutes to present their solution. During the final round, team JMSB was one of the three finalists. The students presented before a panel of nine judges who are primarily industry Human Resources professionals.

The winning team is composed of undergraduate students Allyson Ifergan, Manish Kapoor and Jessica Kuan. Aaron Dresner and Matthew Fishman were their HR coaches.

Final results:
JMSB, Concordia University
McMaster University
Sir Wilfred Laurier University

The team and coaches want to thank the Human Resources case competition alumni who helped prepare the team for victory. Special thanks go to Head Coach Mark Haber for supporting the competition program, as well as to Rebecca Golt for supporting the team.
