Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business participated in the 2012 Financial Open Case Competition, which was held at Concordia from February 3 to 5. JMSB has a history of success in this competition and this year’s delegation ensured that the trend continue as they placed second overall.

The final overall standings were:

1. HEC Montréal
2. John Molson School of Business, Concordia University
3. Université Laval

The finance coaches were Reena Atanasiadis, Amr Ezzat and Thomas Horvath. The Accounting coaches were Gail Fayerman, Basel Arafe, Patrick Gagnon, Tara Ramsaran and Martina Petrova.

Alana Des Coeurs, Isabella Matteo, and Catherine Richard represented Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) at Ryerson University’s 7th annual Organizational Behaviour Case Competition (OBCC).

Having won the competition the two previous years, the team faced their challenge head on, delivering a stellar performance and winning gold. The competition had two phases. In the first phase, participants had two hours to read a case and twenty minutes to present their solution. The three teams selected for the final round had 15 minutes to adjust their recommendations before presenting to a panel of eight judges who are professionals in the Human Resources industry.

Students Samer Balaghi, Michel Berger, Adam Forlini and Samuel Nasso represented Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) at the 2012 Battle on Bay Street, Ryerson University’s Financial Management Case Competition. The JMSB team made its mark on the competition with an impressive third-place place finish.

“The Ryerson case was about Sustainametrics, a tech start-up developing a Smartphone app to help companies implement their sustainability strategy among their employees,” said Berger. “Our job was to value the start-up and determine the best way to finance its growth – it had a projected shortfall in the next year if it did not receive a cash injection. The professor who wrote the case told us we had the most accurate valuation.”

The final rankings were:

1. University of Waterloo (team 1)
2. University of Waterloo (team 2)
3. Concordia University (John Molson School of Business)

Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) took home second place at the Commerce Games (Jeux du Commerce), held this year at Université Laval in Québec City from January 5 to 8, 2012. Over 1,000 students from eastern Canadian universities participated in this competition, making it the biggest commerce competition in eastern Canada. The weekend-long competition put the participants’ skills to the test in a variety of categories which included academics, debate, stock simulation, sports and social. The JMSB teams’ strong performances and team spirit earned the delegation the runner-up spot behind the winners from Ottawa University’s Telfer School of Management and ahead of third-place Université Laval.

January 18th 2012 – In late November 2011, Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business (JMSB) qualified for the final round of the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC), held at Queen’s University’s Queen’s School of Business. JMSB teams qualified in six competition categories: five business disciplines and the category for debate. This in itself was an incredible accomplishment and represent JMSB’s best qualification round results ever.

The JMSB delegation managed to parlay its six entries into four podium finishes – the most of any university at the competition.

The teams that did not qualify worked hard to produce excellent papers. ICBC is a competition where only the top six of as many as 30 teams qualify in each category of the final round.
