1-The John Molson Competition Committee is a student run committee which recruits and trains students to represent JMSB at national and international case competitions. Ultimately, the committee forms a delegation of 100 students that compete in academic cases as well as sports and social at competitions such as the Jeux du Commerce (JDC) and the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.).
2-Essentially, you are put into a team of 2 to 4 people and receive a case explaining a problem or opportunity a company is facing. You then have three hours to put together a PowerPoint presentation including an analysis of the company, alternatives, a recommendation and an implementation plan based on what you believe the company should do. When the three hours are over, you present these ideas to a panel of judges made up of executives from that company as well as industry experts. Most competitions permit you to present in English or French.
There is a mandatory 3 credit case class that all academics must take in the Fall in order to work on their presentation, analytical and PowerPoint skills. There are cases for all of the following disciplines (there is no obligation to try-out for your major):
Strategy, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Ethics, Stock Simulation, Tax, Human Resources, MIS, POM, International Business, Debate
3-Social is a team of four students (two girls, two guys) who must complete a series of tasks throughout the weekend of the case competition. These tasks can take place at any time of the day and are judged based on creativity, teamwork, originality and enthusiasm! Examples of social tasks are coming up with skits, going on a scavenger hunt and decorating your hotel room based on a theme. Think of social as a version of the amazing race! There is a social team for JDC as well as Happening Marketing. Tryouts for social will be held in September.
4-The sports for the 2012 JDC are dodgeball, indoor soccer and tchoukball.
5-The competition program will enhance your university experience. All participants are given the chance to meet hundreds of students from other universities in Canada and around the globe. Other than networking opportunities with other students, many students have made important contacts at case competitions that have led to job opportunities after graduation.
For academics, case competitions give you the opportunity to present to executives of huge companies who often use case competitions as a recruitment tool. Case competitions will also give you presentation skills and practical knowledge that will be very useful in the working world. Academics are also given the opportunity to travel to represent JMSB at international case competitions. Lastly, academics must take a case class that will prepare them for their competitions which will count as a 3 credit business elective.
6-In order to get involved in sports, social or academics, you must go through a sign-up and tryout process. Once you have filled out the sign-up sheet, information regarding applications and tryout dates will be sent to you by email.
7-Applicants must be registered as part-time or full time students at JMSB in the Fall semester.
8-There are no GPA requirements in order to participate in sports, social or academic cases. While we ask for a transcript copy from academic case competition applicants, this is in order to see what courses the applicant has taken and not for GPA purposes.

10-For academic case applicants, you have the opportunity to try out for three different disciplines. Each tryout is 20 minutes long. Essentially, you are given a one page case related to the discipline you have chosen and have 15 minutes to read it and think of your recommendations for the company. You are given a sheet of paper where you may write the key points of your analysis, recommendation and implementation. You will then present your ideas in a 5 minute presentation to a panel of judges made up of current case competition students and teachers, followed by a short Q&A period.
For sports, there will be an intense 6 day tryout that will test your athletic ability and team spirit.
For social there will be two tryouts at the beginning of the fall semester. Tryouts will involve dressing up in costumes based on specific themes, performing a scavenger hunt and many other activities in groups that will test your creativity and originality! Think of social as a version of the amazing race!
11-In order to prepare for academic tryouts, there will be information sessions held by the VP Academics. These information sessions will go over how to analyse a case and how to present during your tryouts. All your questions regarding academic cases will be answered during these sessions. There is also sample case and solution posted that can be useful to look over before your tryouts.
12-There will be info sessions during the first two weeks of school. The dates and times will be posted shortly. You can also send any questions to info@jmcconline.ca.
13-We highly encourage academics, sports and social applicants to attend all of their tryouts. This will increase your chances of being selected. Furthermore, if you are looking to be an ambassador for sports or a volunteer for the delegation, it is recommended to attend as many tryouts as possible to cheer and show support to those trying out.
14-Step 1: Fill out the sign-up sheet.
Step 2: Fill out and send back the Application Form that will be sent to you.
Step 3: Pick your tryout dates on the spreadsheet that will be sent to you shortly after step 2.
15-If you are picked to be part of the our delegation, you are assured to be sent to one of the two following competitions:
