Having won the competition the two previous years, the team faced their challenge head on, delivering a stellar performance and winning gold. The competition had two phases. In the first phase, participants had two hours to read a case and twenty minutes to present their solution. The three teams selected for the final round had 15 minutes to adjust their recommendations before presenting to a panel of eight judges who are professionals in the Human Resources industry.

“The Ryerson case was about Sustainametrics, a tech start-up developing a Smartphone app to help companies implement their sustainability strategy among their employees,” said Berger. “Our job was to value the start-up and determine the best way to finance its growth – it had a projected shortfall in the next year if it did not receive a cash injection. The professor who wrote the case told us we had the most accurate valuation.”

The JMSB delegation managed to parlay its six entries into four podium finishes – the most of any university at the competition.

The JMSB team of Phoebe Li, Tarun Suri, Veronica Perez and Mariann Rossi finished an impressive second overall, while a second team composed of Ranjit Girn, Eric Mcdonald, Lucie Keuyalian and Greg Synanidis, was eliminated by the eventual winners from University of Saskatchewan. University of Ontario Institute of Technology finished third.

This was JMSB’s second time attending the conference, which is growing every year. This year, the event expanded to 14 senior teams and added a junior division. Coach Patrick Gagnon, who accompanied the delegation, noted that “Niagara Falls is a great place in which to host a competition,” and that it “brought out the best performances in our two teams.”

Gagnon also explained that the organizers of the conference were impressed by JMSB’s history of case competition success, recalling last year’s competition when the team took home the gold. “They have already expressed hope that we come back next year,” he said.

This year’s case focused on Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT). The issues were capacity, efficiencies, and competition. The judges found the JMSB team’s solution of using barges for transshipment creative, but wanted more detail. Despite an impressive showing by the team, they were edged out of the competition after the preliminary round.

The team from Thammasat University in Thailand took home top honours, followed by the teams from the University of British Columbia, University of Southern California and National University of Singapore.

This year’s case was about how a bank should proceed with a family facing negative equity on their home and whose present situation would make it difficult for them to make their mortgage payments.

The competition consisted of three phases. The first round was a 20-minute presentation with a five-minute Q & A on issues pertinent to the presentation. In the second round, the judges asked six predetermined standard questions to all teams. The cumulative scores were added together and the winners in each division went on to the finals. In the finals, teams had to trim their presentations down to 10 minutes and one standard question was asked of each of them.

Despite an impressive showing by the JMSB team, they were edged out of the competition after the cumulative two preliminary rounds. The team from the University of Texas at Austin took home top honours, followed by the teams from Northern Illinois University, U.S. Naval Academy and Brigham Young University.

The case this year was on Suncor Energy. The teams had 38 hours to prepare a solution and presentation for the case. Teams got the chance to have a Q & A with Suncor executives and a 30 minute consulting period with an industry expert. The team presented a strong 160 slide presentation detailing every aspect of building a solid foundation for Suncor’s future and realigning the company’s assets with its core vision. While the John Molson team’s performance was stellar, the team did not reach the final round.

For the first time in the competition’s history, the Secor Case Competition was open to all four business schools in Montreal: HEC-Montreal, Desautels at McGill University, JMSB at Concordia University, and École des science de la gestion at UQAM. This year’s competition included four teams from HEC and one team from each of the other schools. The competition focused on strategy and evaluated the participants’ reasoning and analysis skills. Two teams from HEC-Montreal rounded off the top three positions.
